The following statement is attributable to Julie Dussliere United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee chief of Paralympic sport and National Paralympic Committee secretary general:

“While the possibility of wheelchair basketball being excluded from the Paralympic Games is disappointing, we fully support the International Paralympic Committee governing board in their commitment to preserve and protect the integrity of Paralympic sport.

“It is unfortunate that the long-standing issues of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation have reached a critical juncture just a few months before the Paralympic Games. It is the responsibility of the IWBF to insure that wheelchair basketball has a fair and accurate classification system, and we urge them to expedite this process as quickly as possible.  Additionally, we strongly support governance reforms within the IWBF to support increased athlete representation and athlete voice.

“The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee will continue to work with the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and support Team USA’s wheelchair basketball athletes with the aim that they will have the opportunity to defend their Paralympic titles in Tokyo.”
