James Southam (Anchorage, Alaska) was the highest American finisher in the men’s 15km free cross country competition at Whistler Olympic Park Monday afternoon. His time of 35:58.2 was good for 48th place, 2:21.9 behind the gold medal effort of Dario Cologna of Switzerland, who took the gold medal with a 33:36.3. The silver medal went to Pietro Piller Cottrer of Italy in 34:00.9, while Lucas Bauer of the Czech Republic won the bronze in 34:12.0.


Other American finishers: Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), 58th, 36:41.5; Kris Freeman (Andover, N.H.), 59th, 36:41.6; and Simi Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.), 64th, 37:30.5.
