A fair, but breezy day greeted the teams as they contested the 31-kilometer team time trial in the morning before the individual race against the clock in the afternoon over the same course. The national championships are also serving as a test event for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships and the courses used for the road race and time trials this weekend will also be raced on by the world's best at the world championships in 2015.
Individual Time Trial
Jones was the fifth of the 36 Division I riders to leave the start house and posted the fastest intermediate split time of 21:42.69 at the halfway mark. After he crossed the finish line at the end of his second lap, his time of 43:24.64 still had to stand up to the 31 riders yet to finish. The wait was a long and agonizing one for Jones.
"It was awful," said Jones. "Just sitting there and waiting to know if you just won a national title was unbelievable, but it was worth the wait."
It was definitely worth the wait as his time held up by more than 13 seconds over runner-up Grant Koontz (Spring, Texas/Texas A&M). Third-place finisher Thomas Schubert (Fogelsville, Pa../Cumberland University) was 29.46 back. Rounding out the top five in the men's Division I individual time trial were two Virginians, Corey Davis (Danville, Va.,/James Madison University) and Bryan Lewis (Roanike, Va./University of Virginia), who finished 1:08.05 and 1:11.65, respectively, behind Jones.
The top three finishers in the Division II men's individual time trial posted faster times than the entire Division I field. Erik Levinsohn (New Haven, Conn./Yale University) was the quickest of the group, finishing in 41:47.94, more than 48 seconds ahead of second-place finisher,Spencer Oswald (Lincoln, Neb./Colorado Mesa University). Brian Dziewa (Saint Louis, Mo./Saint Louis University) won the bronze medal ahead of Craig Richey (Smithers, B.C./Bentley University) and Stephen Vogel (Winston-Salem, N.C./Wake Forest University, who rounded out the top five.

Also defending her national title on Friday was Jasmine Hansen (Grimes, Iowa/U.S. Air Force Academy) in the Division II women's race. She completed the course in 48:27.82.Danielle Haulman (Davis, Calif./Golden Gate University) slipped into the silver medal spot with a time of 49:03.73, knocking last year's silver medalist, Adelaide Tillinghast(Redmond, Wash./American University), into the bronze-medal position. Monica Volk(Kempton, Pa./Penn State-Lehigh Valley) finished over a minute and a half behind Tillinghast to place fourth and Katy Applin (Winston-Salem, N.C./Wake Forest University) came in fifth.
Team Time Trial
Three of the four defending champions were unseated in the team time trial event on Friday morning. Fort Lewis College regained their Division I men's title from two years ago by defeating defending champion Marian University. The Skyhawks' riders - Griffin Easter (Upland, Calif.), Natan Cavalca (Durango, Colo.), Dean Haas (Lakewood, Colo.) and Zack Noonan (Kutztown, Pa.) - registered a time of 40:42.91 to win handily over Marian and their time of 41:16.24. Lindenwood University placed third with a 41:49.05 mark. Stanford University was fourth and Midwestern State University finished fifth.

Claiming both Division II titles were the teams from Colorado Mesa University. The men's team of Cullen Easter (Claremont, Calif.), Zack Lavergne (Little Rock, Ark.),Spencer Oswald (Lincoln, Neb.) and Samuel Phillips (Grand Junction, Colo.) topped the field with a time of 41:49.56. The rest of the men's Division II podium consisted of Mars Hill College in second, the University of Notre Dame in third, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in fourth and King College placing fifth.
Ariana Dittmer (Grand Junction, Colo.), Ariane Horbach (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Lexie Millard (Grand Junction, Colo.) powered the Colorado Mesa University women's team to a time of 48:40.61 to upset the defending champions from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who crossed the line in 49:19.08. Whitman College came in third, more than 50 seconds behind MIT, while the U.S. Air Force Academy and Brevard College placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Omnium Standings
After the first day of competition, Marian University holds a 27-point cushion on Fort Lewis College in the Division I team omnium standings. Stanford University is in third place with 137 points.
After sweeping the team time trials, Colorado Mesa University has 188 points and leads the Division II team omnium standings by 41 points over The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The U.S. Air Force Academy is in third place, with 107 points.
Coming Up
Saturday's racing features the criteriums in downtown Richmond. The Division II women will begin the day's racing at noon, followed by the Division I women at 1 p.m., the Division II men at 2 p.m., and the Division I men's race capping the day's racing at 3:30 p.m.
The event's third and final day features the road races on a 9.7-mile circuit. The 78-kilometer women's races begin with the Division II women at 7 a.m. The Division I women will begin their contest at 9:50 a.m. The men's races span 109.2 kilometers and will begin with the Division II men's race at 1 p.m., followed by the Division I men's race beginning at 4:20 p.m. The event's final awards ceremony following the conclusion of the last race will crown the country's best collegiate road racers as well as the individual and team omnium winners.
