The 2014 Youth Olympic Games were held from Aug. 16-28 in Nanjing, China. More than 3,800 athletes representing 204 nations participated. The 13-day competition for athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 featured all 28 sports on the program for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Following the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games that took place in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012, the second summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games also included innovative events that were not on the current Olympic program. Non-Olympic events included 3-on-3 basketball, a skills challenge for field hockey, and mixed gender and/or mixed country team events.
