Goalball Preview
Men’s and women’s goalball will return to action at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru. Pool play begins on Sunday, Aug. 25 with the medal matches being contested on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Villa Deportiva Regional del Callao.

The U.S. will send a seasoned group of goalball athletes, sprinkled with a few rising stars to compete at in Lima. Two-thirds of the men’s and women’s goalball rosters include medalists from the Paralympic Games Rio 2016.

For the U.S. men’s goalball team, the Parapan Am Games represent the final opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games. The team will need to finish on the top step of the podium or second, only to Brazil – who already qualified for the 2020 Games – to secure their ticket to Tokyo next year. Four returning members (Tyler Merren, Daryl Walker, John Kusku, Matt Simpson) from the silver-medal winning team that competed in Rio will lead the charge in Lima.

The women’s team has already secured their Tokyo 2020 qualification with a silver-medal performance at the recent IBSA Goalball Qualifier. They will be led by coach Jake Czechowski and boast four members of the 2016 bronze medal team from the 2016 Paralympic Games: five-time Paralympian and four-time Paralympic medalist Lisa Czechowski, two-time Paralympian Amanda Dennis, Eliana Mason and Marybai Huking. 

Goalball competition will begin with the U.S. women vs. host nation Peru followed by the U.S. men against Canada on Aug. 25. Medal matches will be contested on Aug. 31.
