In November 1999 the first edition of the Parapan American Games was held in Mexico City, Mexico. A total of 1,000 athletes from 18 countries competed across four sports: athletics, swimming, table tennis and wheelchair basketball. Gold medal-winners at the Parapan American Games Mexico City 1999 secured a place at the Paralympic Games Sydney 2000.
Since 1999, the Parapan American Games have taken place every four years. However, it was not until 2007 that the Parapan American Games were staged in the same city as the Pan American Games. Now, the Parapan American Games take place shortly after the conclusion of the Pan American Games.
