Fencing Preview
The U.S. fencing team will compete at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, less than two weeks after the conclusion of the FIE Senior World Championships, with 16 of Team USA’s 18 fencers also competing at the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, on July 15-23.

Team USA includes nine Olympians and at least eight FIE Senior World Championship medalists, with two athletes competing in each of the six individual events (men’s and women’s epee, foil and saber) and three athletes competing in each of the team events.

The USA Fencing team dominated the team competitions at the 2018 Pan American Fencing Championships, winning all six team golds as well as a total of 16 individual medals, including five golds.

Lee Kiefer remains the most dominant fencer in the Pan American zone – regardless of gender or weapon – with nine straight women’s foil Pan American Championship titles to her credit. The two-time Olympian holds back-to-back Pan American Games golds, earning titles in 2011 and 2015. Kiefer, the No. 4 fencer in the world, has yet to drop an individual direct elimination bout in Pan American competition.

Currently ranked No. 1 in the world, men’s saber fencer Eli Dershwitz won gold at the Pan American Games Toronto 2015 shortly before qualifying for his first Olympic Games in Rio. Dershwitz also won Pan American Championship titles in 2014, 2015 and 2018. One of his greatest challenges will come from teammate Daryl Homer – a 2016 Olympic medalist who missed the individual podium at the 2015 Pan American Games but holds two individual Pan American Championship golds.

With five Pan American Championship titles to his credit, 2016 Olympic team medalist Race Imboden will be making his Pan American Games debut in Lima and the world No. 3 is among the favorites for men’s foil gold. Imboden’s teammate in Rio, Gerek Meinhardt, is a veteran of two Pan American Games teams, winning silver in 2015. Ranked No. 6 in the world, Meinhardt also holds three Pan American Championship titles.

In the epee events, 2016 Olympian Kat Holmes will aim to defend her 2015 Pan American Games title in her second appearance at the Games. The men’s epee competition will include first-time Pan American Games team members Curtis McDowald and Jake Hoyle – both of whom have earned medals on the world cup circuit this season and hold top-10 world rankings.

Women’s saber fencer Eliza Stone will be fencing at her first Pan American Games but is a top contender for gold after winning bronze at the 2018 FIE Senior World Championships.
