Basketball Preview
The basketball competitions at the Pan American Games Lima 2019 will kick off from July 27-29 with men’s and women’s 3x3 basketball tournaments.

The discipline is making its Pan American Games debut this year and will feature six men’s and six women’s teams. The U.S. men’s and women’s 3x3 teams will be comprised of athletes who competed in the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 Nationals.

Basketball continues Aug. 1-5 with the men’s 5x5 tournament that will feature eight teams, followed by the women’s 5x5 tournament – also featuring eight teams – from Aug. 6-10. While USA Basketball will field the women’s 5x5 team, which will be comprised of college athletes from across the U.S., the men’s 5x5 team will be comprised of athletes from the Big East Conference.

Most recently, the U.S. men’s team earned the bronze medal at the Pan American Games Toronto 2015 and are 90-17 all-time in Pan American Games play. The U.S. women’s team also have a competitive 78-15 all-time record and earned the silver medal in 2015.

The tournaments do not affect qualification for the two 5x5 events that will take place in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, but Lima 2019 does offer a chance for up-and-coming players to test themselves against the rest of the continent and represent the U.S. with hunger and pride. All four teams are hoped to be in contention for podium finishes in Lima, Peru.
