American beach volleyball and team handball athletes got an early start to the Pan American Games Lima 2019, competing two days before the Opening Ceremony.

Team Handball
In their first match of the preliminary round, the U.S. women opened the scoring, with Nicole Andersen finding the back of Argentina’s net less than two minutes into play. Andersen and Jence Rhoads led the U.S. in scoring with five goals each, but the team ultimately fell to Argentina, 15-26.

Volleyball – Beach 
In Team USA’s first competition at Lima 2019, the women’s beach volleyball team of Karissa Cook and Jace Pardon defeated Trinidad and Tobago in two sets in the preliminary round. Cook and Pardon won both sets by a large margin, finishing 21-9 and 21-8.

The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team also earned a decisive victory in its opening match of the tournament. Mark Burik and Ian Satterfield defeated El Salvador, 21-12 and 21-10, to win their first match in the preliminary round pool play.
