Crawford Family U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Archives

The participation medals in the Crawford Family U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Archives make up one of the most complete collections in the world, dating back to the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896. Participation medals are different from Olympic medals in that each member of the Olympic team receives one to commemorate their participation in the Olympic Games. In addition, quite often other participants are presented with one, including judges, officials, dignitaries, members of National Olympic Committees and volunteers. Participation medals serve as recognition for those who contributed to the Games and commemoration of what makes each Games memorable and unique.
