Basketball (1 gold)

The women’s team earned the gold medal in the 3x3 event, defeating France with a 18-4 blowout win in the final game. Earlier in the day the sailed through the semifinal game with a 21-9 victory over China. The women ended the Youth Olympic Games tournament with an undefeated record (7-0).


Archery (1 gold)

Trenton Cowles earned the gold medal in the men’s recurve individual event, the first medal by an American archer at a Youth Olympic Games and first gold in an Olympic event since 1996. In the final match, Cowles faced India’s Akash Akash and emerged victorious, winning 6-0. Previously in the day, Cowles defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chihchun Tang, 7-1, in the 1/8 elimination round and Iran’s Reza Shibani, 6-0, in the quarterfinals before defeating Ukraine’s Artem Ovchynnikov, 6-0, in the semifinals.


Beach Volleyball

The U.S. women’s team of Lindsey Sparks and Devon Newberry lost 2-1 to Norway’s Friday Berntsen and Emilie Olimstad in the bronze-medal match. The Americans won the first set 21-18, but dropped the next two, 21-13 and 15-9, to place fourth overall at the Youth Olympic Games.


In the mixed international team final, U.S. athletes Bridget O’Neil and Jack Matthews were paired as teammates. They finished 13th with 263.70 points.
