Wrestling (1 gold)
Emily Shilson earned first in the women's freestyle 43 kg. weight class event, besting India’s Simran Simran for Team USA’s first individual gold medal of the Games. Lynn Tiare competed in the women's freestyle 49 kg. weight class event, finishing sixth. MORE.

In the mixed international team event, Catalina GNoriega and Hazael Jesus Rodriguez Valero of Cuba lost in the 1/16 elimination round with a total of 84 points. Trenton Cowles paired with Quinn Reddig of Namibia to advance to the 1/8 elimination round with a total score of 114.

Beach Volleyball      
Timothy Brewster and John Schwengel shut out the Brazilian team of Joao Camargo de Barros Moreiera and Gabriel Zuliani in the men’s round of 24. The Americans won 2-0 (25-23, 21,18).

Zoe Hein competed in the canoe head to head sprint qualifications and advanced to the last 16. Fellow American Robert Healy competed in the kayak head to head sprint qualification heats but did not advance. The Youth Olympic Games require canoe and kayak athletes to race in both sprint and slalom races. Hein and Healy are both slalom racers, and will compete in their preferred events on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16.

Mattie Hatcher finished fourth in the jumping individual final, riding cleaning in her first two rounds before hitting two fences in the jump-off. Pedro Espinosa of Honduras, with whom Hatcher won gold in the mixed-country team event earlier in the Games, took third. MORE.

In the first day of the mixed team event, U.S. athletes Akshay Bhatia and Lucy Li combined efforts to shoot eight under par for 62. Currently ranked third, they will continue competition on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Brandon Briones finished just shy of the podium in the men's’ floor exercise and pommel horse final. In the floor exercise, Briones finished in fourth place with a score of 13.466 (4.70 difficulty, 8.766 execution). For the pommel horse, Briones picked up a fifth place finish with his score of 12.733 (4.50 difficulty, 8.233 execution.

The rugby sevens team opened competition in Buenos Aires with one tie and one loss. In the afternoon game, Team USA tied Samoa 24-24 with two ties apiece from Inoke Waqavesi and Tyren Al-Jiboori. Sione Mahe and Jon Rodriguez both converted extra points. Team USA had a tough loss in the morning with a 38-0 shutout from the French team.

Nico Martin and AnaClare Sole wrapped up competition in the mixed two-person multihull Nacra 15. The U.S. sailors finished ninth in the final race to secure a sixth-place finish overall. Cameron Maramenides’ final race in men's kiteboarding IKA twin tip was postponed until Sunday, Oct. 14, due to weather. He is currently ranked second.

Table Tennis 
Amy Wang and Kanak Jha picked up one win and one loss in the preliminary stage of the mixed international team event. In the morning, the U.S. athletes lost 2-1 against the Romanian team of Andreea Dragoman and Cristian Pletea. But they rebounded in the afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the team of Hui Ling Vong and Nathan Xu of New Zealand. The U.S. team advanced to Sunday’s round of 16.

Track and Field        
Skylar Ciccolini sits in eighth place after stage one of the women’s javelin throw with a mark of 49.90 meters. In a track and field format unique to the Youth Olympic Games, all athletes compete in two stages of competition and the results are combined to determine the medalists.
