“By learning you will teach; by teaching you will understand.”
Latin Proverb
It is hard to believe that two weeks have past since I posted my last blog. I guess the old adage time flies when your having fun holds true. I have to admit however that the traveling that my job brings is often a challenge. I am so grateful to have a supportive spouse who understands and respects the demands that my job requires. Without her support I wouldn't be able to be as invested to my athletes as I am. It is a challenge to balance two careers that require both of us to travel frequently not to mention the demands that a 6 month old brings to the table. A special thanks to my in laws for their yearly track out to California to help with Riley this time around. This ensures that Marie and I get our weekly date night, lol. Having said that I am excited to catch all of you up to date on my travels and experiences these past few months.
27th Annual All-Star Track and Field Clinic, December 14-16
When I arrived home from Missouri I was able to have a few days home before I shot off to Atlantic City, New Jersey for the MF Athletic All-Star Track and Field Clinic. It was quite an honor to be able to have three sessions at such a prestigious clinic. The Falk family not only puts on a great clinic but they are truly great for the sport of track and field. If you ever need anything related to track and field or want to find a track clinic in your area I highly recommend you visit their websitewww.everythingtrackandfield.com. The enthusiasm of the coaches at this clinic was truly refreshing; it is encouraging to see so many people passionate about track and field. This clinic confirmed to me how important teaching is to my advancement as a coach. The process of preparing lectures and presentations is a great way for me to evolve as a coach. It has reminded me that basic fundamentals are the foundation that all success is built upon. When in doubt about anything go back to the basics.
Christmas
As great as the clinic in New Jersey was I was excited to get on a plane for Des Moines, Iowa to meet my wife in Aurora, Iowa for the Young Family Christmas. This is my favorite time of year when family can get together and enjoy the blessings in our lives. I have had quite a bit of time to reflect on my travels in the process of writing these past 2 blogs and I realized how important balance is in life. The traveling also reminded me that athletes also need to find balance so they can make it to the end of their Olympic Journey. Just as it is imperative for an athlete to eat a well balanced meal and train; it is equally important for athletes to keep a well balanced life. With the Olympics quickly approaching and as we move into February the track and field season is in full swing. I look forward to keeping you up to date on the progress of our athletes. Take a look at the you tube video and get a sneak peek of how it’s going so far.
