In 2010, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee began using working groups to help tackle important issues within the organization. The working groups – comprised of both internal and external industry leaders and experts – convene during a six-month period. Members are recruited by the USOPC and work together to compile a report of recommendations that is presented to the USOPC’s board of directors.

To date, working groups have convened on the following topics: safe training environments, diversity inclusion and athlete career, education and life skills.

Working Group for Safe Training Environments

This working group met with the goal of developing a set of recommendations for promoting safe training environments in sport to the USOPC’s board of directors and chief executive officer. The group focused on four primary objectives: addressing the significance of sexual and physical misconduct in sport, reviewing guidelines and best practices for promoting safe training environments, assessing the needs of athletes, coaches, staff, NGBs, clubs and other organizations to promote safe training environments and providing recommendations that promote safe training atmospheres and safe environments for athletes.

Diversity Inclusion Working Group

This group was charged with formulating diversity strategies for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Family in the United States. Incorporating greater diversity into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movements serves several long-term goals; reaching new communities grows elite athlete and membership pipelines, revenue, audiences and leadership talent.

Athlete Career, Education and Life Skills Working Group

This group evaluated the role of athlete career and education development in supporting the USOPC’s mission to support U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes in achieving sustained competitive excellence and preserve the Olympic ideals, and thereby inspire all Americans. During the course of its work, the group focused on three objectives: assessing the relationship between athlete career programs and competitive success, making recommendations, within existing budgets and resources, for a focused career and education strategy and presenting options for programs that may be implemented given incremental program resources.
