Every candidate that is nominated for the Best of the Month Awards is automatically placed in the running for the Best of the Year Awards.

Prior to 2015, annual awards were also recognized in years in which the Olympic and Paralympic Games were held. Under the old format, winners were selected based on nominations from the National Governing Bodies for the Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American and Parapan American Games sports, as well as select, designated entities within the U.S. Paralympic Movement. The award period highlighted performances from September of the previous year through August of the current year.
