Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Mango won a battle of Olympians in sweeping Sam Hazewinkel in the finals of the Greco-Roman World Team Trials on Friday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mango made his seventh straight World-level team by downing Hazewinkel 13-2 and 8-0 in the final-round series at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Mango, a two-time Olympian, made his fifth straight U.S. World Team. He placed fifth at the 2013 World Championships.

Mango will compete at September’s World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He wrestles for the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program and won a strong weight class in Florida that also included 2013 World Team member Jesse Thielke.

Hazewinkel, a 2012 Olympian in freestyle, returned to Greco competition with separate World Team Trials being held this year for the first time in 15 years. He had placed second at the World Team Trials in freestyle two weeks ago.

Hazewinkel, a two-time U.S. Open champion in Greco, finished second in the World Team Trials in Greco for the third time. He won four matches to capture the Challenge Tournament on Friday and earn a shot at Mango in the finals.
