Boys' National Team Pipeline

What is USA Volleyball High Performance?

USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body for the sport of volleyball in the United States. USAV is responsible for operating the USA National Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams, the USA Olympic Teams, and also USA Youth and Junior National Teams for each gender. The Youth and Junior National Teams, along with a number of tiered training programs, fall under the High Performance Department, or HP.

The High Performance Department works to advance volleyball talent and build a broader and stronger pipeline of athletes and coaches for our USA Olympic Teams. The High Performance Program bridges the gap between our USA National Teams and youth volleyball programs across the country. This is done through a system of national tryouts which then qualify athletes for training programs, camps, and Youth and Junior National Teams. The HP Program at USA Volleyball is the “Pipeline” for volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite level of their sport and is intended to grow the pool of talented young players who may someday compete for a spot on the USA National and Olympic Teams.

The HP Program and Athlete Pipeline include players of each gender in five age groups that are based on the birth year of the athlete. Those age groups are referred to as Senior (oldest) Junior, Youth, Select, and Future Select (youngest). These age groups are determined by an athlete's year of birth using mandatory international criteria beginning approximately when they are 11 or 12 years old as Future Select athletes and continues for eight seasons through the Junior age group, often into their collegiate years. Many athletes also continue through their college years in the Senior age group in the Senior A2 Program, US National Training Team, US National Team, and ultimately, the USA Olympic Team.

How do I get involved?

Every athlete's first step to getting involved with USA Volleyball High Performance is to attend one of USA Volleyball High Performance Tryouts at a convenient location.  USAV HP offers more than 30 locations all across the country. You will register in the age group that corresponds with the year you were born - see below for more information on designate age groups.  All athletes will need to create a new membership account in order to try out in 2015.  This is free and takes only a minute. After December 1, you will be able to log into your account and register for the tryout(s) of your choice in the position in which you would like to try out.

What happens after I try out?

After you attend a tryout, the evaluation from your tryout will be compared with thousands of other volleyball players nationwide in your position and age group.  Depending on your evaluation, you may be offered a spot in a USA Volleyball High Performance National Training Program hosted at locations across the country.  You would then have the opportunity to register for the program and enter the USAV High Performance Athlete Pipeline.

I accepted an invitation to a High Performance program, what's next?

Train, compete, and have fun!  USA Volleyball High Performance Programs offer the highest level training available in the country but are also the place where friends are made – friends who often become teammates in other HP Programs, in college and beyond.  You will be evaluated at the program you attend and you will receive a copy of that evaluation in the weeks following your participation in the program.  You will need to attend a tryout each year to be evaluated at your current level of skill as USAV HP knows that you will improve year after year.  Your program evaluation coupled with your tryout evaluation next year will determine your where you will stand in the Pipeline next year.  As a USA Volleyball High Performance Athlete, your progress will be tracked by USAV HP staff year after year as you work towards more advanced opportunities.  Being a part of the USA Volleyball High Performance Athlete Pipeline is a challenging but fun and rewarding experience!

The USAV HP age-group classifications are consistent with those established by the FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball). Those age-group classifications govern international competition and all levels of HP programs. Please note that these age-group classifications differ from USA Volleyball Junior club age definitions and also from grade classifications of U.S. school systems.

USAV High Performance works on a two-year cycle, with a cycle starting at the beginning of an even year (like 2016) and finishing at the end of an odd year (like 2017). Athletes remain in the same age group throughout the two years, then move up to the next age group at the beginning of the next even year to start a new cycle (like will happen next into 2016 and will happen again in 2018). Athletes may only try out and play in their own age group – there is no “playing up.”

The reason for these cycles is simple. The two-year cycle matches the international competition schedule in which USA competes. The NORCECA Championships in even years is the opportunity for USA to qualify for the FIVB World Championship in odd years. Keeping athletes in the same age group for both years allows for the same athletes who qualify for Worlds at NORCECA to be eligible to play in Worlds. As each year is a new tryout year, the National Teams will naturally consist of some new athletes and some returning from the NORCECA team, however maintaining the opportunity for the same athletes to participate is the goal.
