U.S. Beach Update: Teams Finished in China

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 3, 2014) – U.S. beach volleyball teams are leaving Shanghai without a medal from the FIVB Grand Slam, but got some good performances.

Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who won the FIVB Fuzhou Open last weekend, had the best finish for the women’s teams as they lost in the third round on Saturday and finished tied for fifth. The fell to Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk  and Barbara Seixas De Freitas, 21-19, 21-17 in 38 minutes.

The U.S. women’s beach teams of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 12, and also No. 13 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Meyers, Fla.) both lost in the second round on Saturday and finished tied for ninth.

On the men’s side, top-seeded of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and also defending Shanghai champions Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 8 both lost in the third round on Friday and finished tied for fifth.

Dalhausser and Rosenthal fell to Italy’s No. 7 Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo (15-21, 21-18, 15-11 in 48 minutes), who went on to win the tournament for their second straight FIVB victory. Gibb and Patterson lost to Brazil’s No. 4 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Emanuel Rego (19-21, 21-15, 15-9 in 53 minutes).

John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), who lost in the qualification bracket but advanced with a “lucky loser” ticket into the main draw, lost in the second round and finished tied for ninth.

Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who also emerged from the qualifier and were seeded 25th, lost in the first round of single elimination and finished tied for 17th.

The next event on the FIVB World Tour is the Puerto Vallarta Open on May 6-11. The following teams are registered to compete:

NORCECA Tour in Guatemala

U.S. beach teams had a very successful first day at the NORCECA Tour event in Guatemala on Friday.

The women’s teams of Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Kim (McGiven) Dicello (San Diego) and also Christal Engle (Pallyup, Wash.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), who finished first and second respectively last weekend in Cayman Islands, are each 2-0 in pool play.

The men’s team of Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.), who placed second in Cayman Islands, is 1-0 in pool play while Derek Olson (Eugene, Ore.) and Kevin McColloch (Solano Beach, Calif.) are 2-0.
