A total of 230 American athletes arrived in Sochi this winter competing for an Olympic medal. Many came out on top of the podium while others have come up short. This is a great time to speak to your youth athletes about how to handle a great win or a tough loss. You may be wondering as a youth sport parent HOW to speak to your young athletes. Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports is here to offer some helpful advice:

Nicole Fawcett, member of Team USA Volleyball, discusses how her parents were involved in her life as a youth sports athlete. "They stepped back when they weren't a coach because they knew what is what like to be a coach and have parents interfere and how it wasn't productive at all." Nicole believes it was this involvement, providing feedback when she asked but not trying to talk volleyball when Nicole didn't want to, aided in her growth as a player and also as a person.

Our kids can learn from success or failure. In fact, sometimes we learn more from our failures than we do from our successes. Reminding your kids that they are not failing so much as they are learning will keep them encouraged. The better you equip them to learn from success and failure, the more able they will be to adapt, learn, and improve through whatever life throws at them.

At Liberty Mutual Insurance, we constantly look for ways to celebrate the countless acts of responsibility shown by people every day. We created Responsible Sports, powered by Positive Coaching Alliance, as part of this belief to help ensure that our kids experience the best that sports have to offer in environments that promote and display responsibility. We believe kids can learn valuable life lessons when coaches and parents come together to support winning on and off the field. Join the Responsible Sports movement!
