Three Women's Teams Advance in Stavanger

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 26, 2014) – Three U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams advanced from pool play on Thursday at the FIVB Stavanger Grand Slam. Meanwhile the men’s teams began pool play.

Seeded No. 1, Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) completed pool play with a 3-0 sweep after defeating Italy’s No. 16 Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth, 21-14, 21-16. The U.S. pair advanced straight to the second round where they await their opponent.

Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 13, advanced to the first round after going 2-1 in pool play. On Thursday, they fell to Brazil’s No. 4 Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas De Frietas, 21-15, 27-25. They will play Australia’s No. 12 Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy in the first round.

Fellow U.S. beach team of No. 14 Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) upset Germany’s No. 3 Karla Borger and Britta Buthe, 21-16, 21-13, 15-12, to wrap up pool play with a 2-1 record. The U.S. team will play Russia’s No. 26 Evgenia Ukolova and Maria Prokopeva.

The U.S. team of Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 27, did not advance to the first round after going 1-2 in pool play and losing to Canada’s No. 22 Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan, 21-17, 21-9 on Thursday.

On the men’s side, Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), seeded No. 1, and John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii), seeded No. 23, both went 2-0 in pool play on Thursday.

Rosenthal and Dalhausser defeated compatriots Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), seeded No. 17 on Thursday, 21-9, 21-18.

Doherty and Lucena came back to win their next match to finish the day 1-1. Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 8, also finished 1-1.

On Friday, women’s first round will begin while men’s pool play concludes.
