Hughes And Woolever Advance To U23 Worlds Main Draw
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 10, 2014) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Sara Hughes and Kellie Woolever advanced to the main draw of the FIVB U23 World Championships, as play began on Tuesday in Myslowice, Poland.

Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Woolever (Long Beach, Calif.) had a bye through the first round of qualifications after being seeded sixth. In the second round, the duo upset third-seeded Line Trans and Julie Guldager of Denmark 21-10, 21-17 in 25 minutes to advance to Pool B as the 23rd seed. Hughes-Woolever will face off against 11th-seeded Lauri Luijken and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The U.S. team of Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif.) and Betsi Metter (Phoenix, Ariz.), who also had to compete in the qualifying bracket, knocked off Canada’s Denise Wooding and Charlotte Sider 21-17, 22-20 in 39 minutes to advance to the second round, before falling to top-seeded Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke of Canada 21-11, 21-18 in 28 minutes.
Hughes and Woolever will join fellow Americans Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Jace Pardon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in main draw pool play. On Wednesdy, Dykstra and Pardon will go against Pool E’s Norisbeth Gonzalez and Gabriela Brito of Venezuela.
On the men’s side, the team of Clay Paullin (Palos Verdes) and Skyler McCoy (Long Beach, Calif.) were defeated in the first round of qualifying by top-seeded Andreas Takvam and Runar Sannarnes of Norway 24-22, 21-16 in 46 minutes.
The U.S. men will be represented by the lone squad of Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.) in the main draw. The pair, seeded 36th, will open pool play on Wednesday against top-seeded Bartosz Losiak and Michal Bryl of Poland in Pool A.
