U19 Beach Teams Have Successful Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 31, 2014) – The U.S. beach teams competing at the FIVB Under-19 Beach World Championships each won both their matches on Thursday in Porto, Portugal.

The U.S. girls’ team of Zana Muno (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Christian Jones (Lakewood, Calif.), seeded No. 4 in Pool D, defeated No. 21 Skye Mondesir and Dala Noel of St. Lucia, 21-7, 21-8. The U.S. team beat Netherlands’ No. 16 Joy Stubbe and Julia Wouters, 21-18, 21-16.

The U.S. boys’ team of T.J. DeFalco (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Louis Richard (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 4 and playing in Pool D, defeated No. 21 Bernardo Silva and Bernardo Leite of Portugal, 21-15, 12-21, 15-12. In the afternoon, the U.S. pair defeated Latvia’s No. 16 Pavels Jemeljanovs and Karlis Kliemans, 21-15, 17-21, 15-7.

The top four finishers of each pool will qualify for the elimination phase. All pool winners get a bye in the first knockout round, plus the two highest ranked runners-up.

The final pool play matches will be played on Friday along with the first round of single elimination. Medal matches will be played on Aug. 3.
