Cuba Defeats MJNT, 3-0

By Jessica Hall | July 31, 2014, 11:35 a.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 29, 2014) – The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team fell to Cuba, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18, on Wednesday, to continue the U-21 NORCECA Continental Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador.

“They have a lot of talent and are in great physical condition,” Head Coach Daniel Friend said. “We had problems with the receptions. Their serve was very strong.”

Cuba controlled every aspect of the match, leading in kills (39-21), blocks (9-1), and aces (5-2).

Outside hitter Brenden Sander (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a total of seven points to lead the U.S. in scoring with six kills and one ace. Middle blocker Jeffrey Jendryk (Wheaton, Ill.) was right behind Sander in kills with four.

Kyle Dagostino (Tampa, Fla.) added one offensive point for the U.S. with one ace on three attempts. Middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw (Newport Beach, Calif.) got the solo block for the U.S.

Libero Evan Enriques (Pahala, Hawaii) led team USA in digs with three and also had 10 excellent receptions on 22 total attempts.

Setter Soren Dion-Kindem (Agoura Hills, Calif.) had 15 running sets on 61 attempts with no faults for the match.

“Cuba is a very strong team,” U.S. team captain Dion-Kindem said. “We played well but we are going to learn from this. It always helps to improve every game for the next match.”’

Team USA moves to 1-1 in the tournament while Cuba advances to 2-0.

Mexico is next on the United States’ schedule, as the two teams face off at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday.

The two pool winners with the highest ranking at the end of prelims will advance directly to the semifinal round, while pool winners with the lowest ranking will join the second-place teams in the quarterfinals.
