U19 Beach Teams Open Porto Pool Play

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 30, 2014) – U.S. beach teams began pool play on Wednesday at the FIVB Under-19 Beach World Championships in Porto, Portugal.

The U.S. boys’ team of T.J. DeFlaco (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Louis Richard (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 4 and playing in Pool D, opened the day with a loss to Brazil’s No. 33 Gabriel Mussi Fichter and Jonas Paixão Fidélis, 21-14, 21-19. The U.S. pair came back to defeat Peru’s No. 28 Luis Bramont – Arias and Jimy Heredia, 21-16, 21-17.

Pool play will continue on Thursday and be completed on Friday.

The U.S. girls’ team of Zana Muno (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Christian Jones (Lakewood, Calif.), seeded No. 4 in Pool D, began with a loss to Russia’s No. 33 Daria Mastikova and Elizaveta Novikova, 22-20, 11-21, 17-15. They bounced back with a win over Turkey’s No. 28 Esra Betul Cetin and Selin Yurtsever, 17-21, 21-18, 15-7.

Two other U.S. U19 beach teams – Sarah Sponcil (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Ali Eager (Florida) for the girls and Kyle Skinner (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Devon Burki (Torrance, Calif.) for the boys – lost in qualifying on Tuesday and did not advance to the main draw.
