Four U.S. U17 Teams Advance To Second Round In Mexico

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 18, 2014) – Four teams have punched their tickets to the second round of single-elimination at the FIVB U17 World Championships, after a big day on the sand for U.S. beach squads in Acapulco, Mexico.

The boys’ team of No. 16-seeded Lucas Lossone (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Aidan Brown (Santa Fe, N.M.) defeated the No. 8-seeded Australian squad composed of Adam Kitto and Bryce Poland, 21-18, 15-21, 15-9, in round one of single-elimination. The American duo will face Spain’s No. 10-seeded Oscar Jimenez and Alejandro Huerta in the second round.

No. 5-seeded Will Bantle (Oakland, Calif.) and Robert Mullahey (Los Angeles, Calif.) already advanced to the second round of single-elimination during the week, after going 2-1 in pool play. The pair will face France’s No. 3-seeded pair, Marc Darrieux and Timothee Platre on Saturday.

On the girls’ side, No. 28-seeded Joy Dennis (Cypress, Calif.) and Haley Hallgren (South Lake, Texas) got an easy win over No. 14-seeded Daniela Garcia and Melissa Luna of Mexico, 21-4, 21-15, on Friday. The duo gets a bye into the second round of single-elimination on Saturday, after winning Pool E.

Also a winner on Friday was the tandem of Morgan Martin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Kathryn Plummer (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). The No. 29-seeded squad defeated the Netherlands’ No 19-seeded team of Nika Daalderop and Susanne Kop, 21-9, 24-22. Martin/Plummer will also be advanced to the second round of single-elimination after winning Pool B.

Rounds two and three of single-elimination will be played on Saturday, with the semifinal and final rounds coming on Sunday.
