U13, U15 Teams Win Gold

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. (July 17, 2014) - Championships were decided in the girls’ under-13 and girls’ and boys’ under-15 divisions on Thursday at the 2014 USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championships in Hermosa Beach, Calif. 

In girls’ U13, Cameron Baklenko and Eden Landwermeyer (USAHP Region) earned gold after a 21-14, 21-13 victory over Camille Hanna and Georgia Via (USAHP Region). 

Balenko and Landwermeyer went a perfect 7-0 throughout the tournament and 14-1 in sets while Hanna and Via went 5-2, 11-5 in sets. 

Claiming bronze was the duo of Rebecca Morse and Kevyn Clark (A1 Region), with a record of 5-1. 


In the boys’ U15 division, Dane Johnson and Luke Grafton (A1 Region) defeated Samuel Udall and Christian Phung (A2) in the championship match, 21-11, 21-9, to claim gold. The duo went a perfect 5-0 in the tournament and 10-1 in sets. 

Claiming bronze was Alex Kormeluk and Will Campell (A1 Region), with a record of 4-1. 

In the girls’ bracket, Lauren White and Kali Uhl (A1 Region) earned U15 gold, defeating Maggie Walters and Haley Gibson (A1 Region), 20-22, 21-18, 15-6. 

In only their second tournament playing together, White and Uhl went 5-0 throughout the tournament, 10-1 in sets. 

“For only playing together two times, we’ve come a long way. It’s a huge accomplishment for us to make it to the finals and win,” White said.

“It was really great to win because all the hard work and training together paid off and that’s so cool to see,” Uhl said.

Claiming bronze was Harper Goldfarb and Jaden Whitmarsh (A1), with a record of 4-1. 

On Thursday, U17 girls’ and boys’ began pool play and will continue on Friday with championships on Saturday.

U19 girls’ and boys’ will begin pool play on Friday and championships will be on Sunday.
