COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 11, 2014) – Three U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams have advanced to the second round at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam.

In Friday’s first-round action, No. 13 seeded, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), who went 2-1 in pool play, defeated compatriots Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.), 21-16, 21-16. Gibb and Patterson will play Brazil’s No. 8 Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Alvaro Morais Filho in round two on Saturday. Rogers and Brunner, who went 1-2 in pool play, finished tied for 17th.
No. 16 seeded Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), who went 1-2 in pool play, beat Canada’s No. 31 Maverick Hatch and Christian Redmann in the first round, 25-23, 21-18. The U.S. pair will go against Brazil’s No. 3 Emanuel Rego and Pedro Solberg Salgado.
Top-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had a first-round bye and will play Austria’s No. 27 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl in the second round on Saturday.
In the second round of the women’s bracket, April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) fell to Switzerland’s No. 9 Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich, 21-19, 21-15. No. 29 Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) fell to Germany’s No. 14 Katrin Holtwich and Ilka Semmler, 10-21, 21-18, 13-15. Both pairs will not advance in the tournament.
In the first round, fellow U.S. team Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 12, fell to Germany’s No. 24 Chantal Laboureur and Anni Schumacher, 21-19, 21-18. No. 16, Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) lost to Brazil’s No. 6 Juliana Felisberta Da Silva and Maria Antonelli, 21-16, 18-21, 20-18.
Both Ross and Day and also Fendrick and Sweat finished the tournament tied for 17th.
