U.S. Beach Teams Advance in Gstaad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 10, 2014) – The U.S. men’s and women’s beach teams continue to shine at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Gstaad, Switzerland.

All four women’s teams will advance out of pool play while the men wrap up pool play on Friday.

Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 1, and Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 29, wrapped up pool play 3-0. Both pairs will have a first-round bye and begin Round 2 on Friday. 

Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded No. 16, and Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 12, finished pool play 1-2. Both teams will compete in the first round of elimination.

Ross and Day will play Brazil’s No. 6 Juliana Felisberta Da Silva and Maria Antonelli and Frendrick and Sweat will play Germany’s No. 24 Chantal Laboureur and Anni Schumacher on Friday.

On the men’s side, the team of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 1, went 2-0 on the first day of pool play defeating Switzerland’s No. 32 Mats Kovatsch and Jonas Kissling, 21-17, 21-16, and later defeated compatriots Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), 23-21, 21-12.

The U.S. team of Lucena and Doherty also lost to Poland’s No. 17 Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz, 22-20, 19-21, 17-15.

Fellow U.S. team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 13, also went 2-0 in pool play. Gibb and Patterson beat Kazakhstan’s No. 20 Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko, 21-17, 24-22, and then beat Mexico’s No. 29 Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen, 21-15, 21-16.

Seeded No. 28, the American duo of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished day one 1-1. After upsetting Latvia’s No. 5 Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins, 32-30, 21-23, 15-12, the pair fell to Germany’s No. 12 Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik, 21-16, 21-18.
