U.S. Women Earn Second Win Over Brazil

LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2014) – Alix Klineman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Kelsey Robinson (Bartlett, Ill.), starting their first matches at the senior level against top-ranked Brazil, combined for 35 points in leading the second-ranked U.S. Women’s National Team to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 victory on Sunday evening at the Galen Center on the campus of University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Klineman, who recently switched from outside hitter to opposite, turned in a match-high 19 points with 14 kills on 27 attacks, three blocks and two aces. Robinson chipped in 13 kills on 25 attacks with just one error, while adding two blocks and an ace.

Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) added eight points, including three blocks. Kristin Hildebrand (Orem, Utah) provided seven kills in the victory. Rachael Adams (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled six kills on 12 errorless attacks. Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.), who set Team USA to a 45 kill percent for the match, contributed two kills and an ace. Libero Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.), who played at USC, tallied a team-leading 11 digs.

Brazil was led Fe Garay with eight points, while Fabiana and Thaisa pocketed seven points.

Team USA out-blocked Brazil 7-1 and held a 6-2 advantage in aces. The U.S. defense limited Brazil to a 38 kill percent.

The U.S. won the opening match of the USA Volleyball Cup 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19 on Saturday evening in Irvine, Calif. The four-match USA Volleyball Cup shifts to Honolulu with match at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center on July 11 and July 12 at 7 p.m. HT.

The U.S. Women have lost to Brazil in the last two Olympics Games gold-medal matches in 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 (London).
