Beach Update: Florida Rain
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 15, 2013) – Beach volleyball tournaments in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mazatlan, Mexico kept U.S. teams busy over the weekend of Sept. 13.
AVP – St. Petersburg
Thunderstorms rained out both the women’s and men’s finals on Sunday at the AVP Tour event in St. Petersburg, Fla.
April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) were scheduled to play Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) in the women’s final. The men’s final had Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) facing off against Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.).
The men’s final is scheduled to be replayed on Sept. 26 in Santa Barbara, prior to the start of the AVP Tour event there. The women’s final cannot be replayed at a later event because April Ross is reportedly playing with Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) for the rest of the season.
Kessy and Ross advanced to the finals in St. Petersburg by defeating Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) in the semifinals, 21-17, 19-21, 15-10 in 1 hour, 14 minutes; the longest match of the winners’ bracket.
Day and Ross beat Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) in the other semifinal, 22-20, 21-17.
Day and Summer Ross played April Ross and Kessy in the finals of the AVP event in Atlantic City, N.J., where Ross and Kessy won, 2-1.
On the men’s side, Brunner and Lucena advanced to the men’s final by upsetting No. 2 seeds Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) in the semifinals, 15-21, 21-19, 15-10. Gibb and Patterson defeated Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and John Hyden, 22-24, 21-17, 15-2.
The next event on the AVP Tour will be in Santa Barbara on Sept. 27-29.
