COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 29, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Lane Carico and Heather Hughes qualified for the main draw of the FIVB Phuket Open in Phuket, Thailand on Tuesday.
Seeded No. 4 in qualification, Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)and Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) defeated 13th-seeded Mariafe Artacho and Nicole Laird of Australia, 21-15, 23-21 in 38 minutes.

Carico and Hughes are seeded 25th in the main draw and will compete in Pool H along with compatriots Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.). Day and Ross, seeded No. 9, begin action on Wednesday (Oct. 30) against No. 24 Yuan Yue and Yuanyuan Ma of China, while Carico and Hughes start off against No. 8 Rumpaipruet Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak of Thailand.
Also competing in Phuket are the teams of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) as well as Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).
Fopma and Sweat are regularly partners, having recently won the AVP Championship at Huntington Beach on Oct. 20. Kessy and Ross played together for seven years and won a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Ross and Fopma, seeded third, will compete in Pool C and open play against No. 30 Ekaterina Makroguzova and Nadezda Makroguzova of Russia. Sweat and Kessy (No. 6) compete in Pool F and first take to the sand against No. 27 Melinda Adelin and Laura Longuet of France.
Pool play matches will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with the top three teams from each pool advancing to the single-elimination rounds. Elimination rounds will take place on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 1-2), with semifinal matches on Saturday and the finals on Sunday (Nov. 3).
