The women’s squad went undefeated in the three-match weekend set with Brazil and swept the South Americans in Sunday’s match, 25-21, 25-21, 25-14. The men’s team lost its second match to Brazil in three sets Sunday, 26-24, 25-18, 25-11.

Both U.S. teams had already qualified for the 2014 ParaVolley World Championships; the men qualified by finishing in the top two and the women by finishing first.

“Our mission all along was to qualify both teams for the world championships, so we’re very pleased that we were able to do that” U.S. Men’s and Women’s Head Coach Bill Hamiter (Bethany, Okla.) said. “I thought both teams played well throughout the weekend.”

The U.S. women led Brazil in kills (29-18), blocks (13-9) and aces (9-5).

The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team was led by Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C.), who finished with 19 points on a match-high 12 kills, three blocks and a match-high four aces. U.S. Team Captain Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash.) added 17 points on 11 kills and a match-high six blocks.

“I think our focus was exactly where it needed to be,” Erickson said. “It was important for us to try some different lineups and to play a lot of people and it leaves us where we want to be going forward.”
