U.S. Teams Start Sao Paulo Slam

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 9, 2013) – U.S. beach volleyball teams got back to competitive international play on Wednesday as main draw pool play began at the FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam.

Women’s teams played two pool play matches on Wednesday while men’s teams played one.

For the U.S. women, Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) went 2-0 as did Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.).

On the men’s side, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 4, defeated U.S. compatriots, No. 20 Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), 20-22, 21-28, 15-13 in 51 minutes.

Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.) and Casey Jennings (Van Nuys, Calif.) defeated Austria’s Lorenz Petutschnig and Alexander Horst (26-24, 21-18 in 48 minutes).

For the women, Walsh Jennings and Ross, seeded No. 10, defeated Kazakhstan’s No. 23 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova (21-19, 21-8 in 31 minutes) and Netherlands’ No. 26 Jantine van der Vlist and Rimke Braakman (21-7, 18-21, 15-11 in 44 minutes).

Fendrick and Hochevar, seeded No. 15, beat U.S. compatriots Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), 21-16, 25-23 in 46 minutes. Fendrick and Hochevar also beat Japan’s No. 31 Takemi Nishibori and Sayaka Mizoe (21-17, 21-12 in 34 minutes). Day and Ross fell to Brazil’s No. 2 1 Maria Clara Salgado Rufino and Carolina Solberg Salgado (21-9, 21-23, 15-10) in 50 minutes.

Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 12, fell to Italy’s No. 21 Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth (19-21, 21-18, 18-16 in 60 minutes).
