Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded ninth in Phuket, will face China’s No. 11 Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia in Sunday’s gold medal match.
On Saturday, Day and Ross faced Brazil’s No. 5 Agatha Bednarczuk and Maria Antonelli in a semifinal showdown. Day finished almost every ball that came her way and, paired with Ross’s placement control, the U.S. duo finally took the match, 21-19, 20-22, 15-12 in 1 hour, 1 minute.
Phuket will be Day and Ross’s best FIVB result ever. Prior to Phuket, the pair’s best FIVB finish was fourth at the FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam.
“We feel pretty awesome, on cloud nine,” Day said. “I mean it’s so really hot out here. We’re just trying to get through each match and play each point.”
Ross added, “It was so hard. The sun was beating down; but somehow we pulled it out. We had some good setting in transition and that really helped us. We’re so stoked, we wanted to end the season on a high and this is it,”
Day and Ross had a challenging third-round match in the morning against No. 16 Rimke Braakman and Jantine van der Vlist from the Netherlands. The U.S. team was slow to find its rhythm, taking the match to three sets, 18-21, 21-19, 15-8 in 50 minutes.
“That was another hard long match, we went three with the Netherlands,” Day said. “They’re a great team they played really hard. It’s just an absolute fight every time we play.”
Day and Ross will face Xue X. and Y. Xia in the final on Sunday with one goal in mind.
“We had a goal coming here to win gold so that’s what we’re going to do,” Day said.
