COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 1, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach team of Emily Day and Summer Ross advanced past the first day of elimination play at the FIVB Phuket Open in Phuket, Thailand on Friday. Three other U.S. teams have been eliminated from the competition.

Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), seeded ninth, went 2-1 in pool play, which advanced them directly into the second elimination round. They faced No. 21 Nina Grawender and Karin Lundqvist of Sweden and earned a 24-26, 21-14, 15-11 victory in 62 minutes. Day and Ross will compete in round three of elimination play on Saturday (Nov. 2), where they will take on Rimke Braakman and Jantine van der Vlist, the No. 16-seeded duo from the Netherlands.
The semifinals will also be played Saturday, followed by the medal matches on Sunday.
Also competing in the second elimination round were April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.). The third-seeded duo was set to face Yuan Yue and Yuanyuan Ma of China (No. 24), but was forced to withdraw from the match due to illness. "Food poisoning, you win," Ross posted to her Twitter account. "You always do. Seeing our match time come & go is painful." Ross and Fopma finish the tournament in a tie for ninth place.
Two U.S. teams were knocked out in round one of elimination play. No. 6 Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Jennifer Kessy (Costa Mesa, Calif.) lost a heartbreaker to Yue and Ma, 29-27, 23-21 in 49 minutes. No. 25 Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) also lost a tough match, falling 23-21, 21-18 to Russia’s No. 10 Evgenia Ukolova and Maria Prokopeva in 43 minutes. Both duos earned a 17th-place finish.
