COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 22, 2013) – The U.S. women’s team of April Ross and Jennifer Kessy will play in the finals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rome Grand Slam on Sunday, while the U.S. men’s teams of Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal has advanced to the semifinals.
Both U.S. teams will play teams from Brazil in their matches on Sunday.
Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), seeded No. 7, will go up against Brazil’s No. 5 Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Taiana Lima for the women’s gold medal.
“We’re hoping it is gold,” Kessy said in an FIVB press release. “We definitely love this place. The sand works in our favor; it is a little deep and it was hot this week. I think it just feels very special here. We just like it in Rome, whatever the weather.
“They (Talita and Lima) are playing amazing. We played them in Shanghai in a close three-setter and didn’t end up on top in that one. We are going to watch a ton of video and we owe them one.”
Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, will play Brazil’s No. 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in the men’s semifinals. Latvia’s No. 6 Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs will face Brazil’s No. 7 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego in the other men’s semifinal.
Dalhausser and Rosenthal advanced to the semifinals with two victories on Saturday. In the second round, the U.S. pair beat Kazakhstan’s No. 15 Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko, 21-17, 21-18 in 44 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Dalhausser and Rosenthal topped Austria’s No. 11 Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, 21-19, 21-18 in 44 minutes.
