RENO, Nev. (July 2, 2013) –  Champions were crowned in the 15 Open and Club division at the 2013 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships being held in Reno, Nev., until July 4. Southern California Volleyball Club (SCVC) 15 Quiksilver (Redondo Beach, Calif.) took the top spot in 15 Open, while Ka Ulukoa 15 Mizuno (Oahu, Hawaii) earned gold in 15 Club.

The gold-medal match in the 15 Open division pitted SCVC 15 Quiksilver (Southern California Region) against Balboa Bay 15 Hurley (Costa Mesa, Calif., Southern California Region) in what would turn out to be a three-set thriller.

Balboa Bay 15 Hurley got on the board first, scoring three quick points. But SCVC 15 Quiksilver rebounded immediately and surged to a 6-3 lead. Not one to stay down, Balboa Bay responded in kind to knot the score at six. It was a tight match from there, as the teams went point for point until SCVC managed a 19-15 lead. SCVC lead by as many as eight points and took the first set 25-20.

The second set began as a horserace with the teams trading points. Balboa Bay pulled away a bit as the set went on and led 17-13. SCVC fought back to within one, at 19-18, and again at 24-23, but Balboa Bay hung on to win set two 25-23.

SCVC maintained a slight edge in the beginning of the third set and led 5-2, but Balboa Bay fought back to within one at 7-6. Balboa Bay tied the score at 12 apiece and took its first lead of the set at 14-12. SCVC managed to foil match point five times and hung on to win the third set 19-17 and the match 2-1.

“We lost last year so it makes it sweet, and I’m glad these kids got their first gold medal at 15s,” SCVC 15 Quiksilver Head Coach Bill Ferguson said. “They deserve it. They played their tails off and I’m just so proud of how they hung in there.”

The first seed overall in the division, SCVC earned a record of 10-1. Balboa Bay 15 Hurley, seeded seventh, went 9-3 and fell to SCVC in the teams’ previous matchup a day earlier.

The teams of West Allis Lightning B15 (West Allis, Wis., Badger Region) and Pali 15 Nike (Pacific Palisades, Calif., Southern California Region) earned the bronze.

In the 15 Club division, Ka Ulukoa 15 Mizuno (Aloha Region) faced off against Santa Monica Beach Club (SMBC) 15 Black (Los Angeles, Calif., Southern California Region) for the gold.

Ka Ulukoa 15 Mizuno had the early advantage in the first set, but SMBC 15 Black responded quickly to take a 9-5 lead. Ka Ulukoa took a 14-12 lead, but again SMBC was able to even it up at 15. Neither team mustered a significant lead through the rest of the set until Ka Ulukoa pulled ahead to win the set 25-23.

The second set also belonged to Ka Ulukoa early, as it led 13-9. That lead stretched to five points, but SMBC battled back to within two, at 18-16. Ka Ulukoa pulled away again to lead 21-16 but after several quick points SMBC was right back in it, trailing 22-20. However, Ka Ulukoa wouldn’t be overtaken, winning set two 25-22 and the match 2-0.

Ka Ulukoa 15 Mizuno, seeded third in its division, went 10-1 in the tournament and fell to SMBC 15 Black when the teams last faced off to end the third round. SMBC 15 Black went 9-2 in the tournament.

“SMBC is a great team,” Ka Ulukoa 15 Mizuno Head Coach David Engleman said. “I think we matched up really well. They had a little bit more height on us, and I think our kids got kind of intimidated when we played them last night. But coming into today they just pulled together and went out fearless.”

Claiming bronze were Ocean Bay 15 Quik (Boca Raton, Fla., Florida Region) and Northern California Volleyball Club Black 15-1 (Meadow Vista, Calif., Northern California Region).
