U.S. Men's Update: Holmes is MVP in Poland
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 24, 2012) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, was named the match MVP as his Polish Plus Liga team Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Lotos Trefl Gdańsk, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 on Oct. 20. Holmes started all three sets and scored 11 points on six attacks, two blocks and three aces.
U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów fell to Zaksa Kędzierzyn-Koźle, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 on Oct. 19. Lotman started all four sets and scored 10 points on eight kills, one block and one ace.
U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andreoli Latina are 3-0 in the Italian Serie A league after defeating Altotevere San Giustino, 25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 22-25, 15-12 on Oct. 21. Troy substituted in the second set and started the third and fourth. He scored three points on one kill, one block and one ace.
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza suffered their first Italian league loss of the season, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 to Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata on Oct. 20. Holt started all three sets and scored four points on three attacks and one block. U.S. outside hitter Futi Tavana (Saipipi, Samoa) is also on the roster for Piacenza, but did not play.
U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Castellana Grotti fell to Sir Safety Perugia, 27-29, 25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 18-16 on Oct. 21. Menzel started all five sets and led Grotti with 23 points on 21 attacks (55.3 kill percent, .500 hitting efficiency), one block and one ace. In Italy’s Serie B league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona defeated Conad Reggio Emilia, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22 on Oct. 21. Muagututia started all four sets and scored 11 points on 11 attacks. He was also credited with 34 receptions, 53 percent positive.
U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his team Tours, are 2-0 in France’s A league after defeating Beauvais Oise UC, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12 on Oct. 20. Smith started all five sets and scored 11 points on four attacks, six blocks and one ace.
AS Cannes, including U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles), is also 2-0 after beating Tourcoing Volleyball, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 on Oct. 20. Rawson started all three sets and was one of the team’s scoring leaders with 12 points on 10 kills (66.7 kill percent, .667 hitting efficiency) and two blocks. Tarr started all three sets and scored nine points on eight attacks and one ace. He was also credited with 15 receptions, 67 percent positive.
U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led Montpellier in its 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 loss to Nantes Reze Metropole on Oct. 20. Clark scored 14 points on 12 attacks and two blocks.
In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) improved to 2-0 after defeating Martigues, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 on Oct. 20. Vance started all three sets and scored seven points on six kills and one block. He was also credited with 13 receptions, 85 percent positive. Scott started all three sets and added four points on three attacks and one ace. Scott was also credited with 16 receptions, 88 percent positive. Watten was credited with eight receptions, 88 percent positive.
FIVB CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan finished fourth at the FIVB Club World Championship in Doha, Qatar.
In the semifinals on Oct. 18, Kazan fell to Italy’s Trentino Diatec Trento, 25-14, 25-20, 25-14. Anderson started the first set and substituted in the third, finishing with three points on three attacks.
Kazan played Poland’s PGE Skra Belchatow in the bronze medal match, and lost 25-18, 18-25, 15-25, 26-24, 15-11. Anderson started all five sets and scored 12 points on nine kills, two blocks and one ace.
In the Turkish league, U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and Halkbank fell to Galatsaray Erkek, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 20-18 on Oct. 20. Priddy played as a substitute and started the fourth and fifth sets, scoring four points on one kill, two blocks and one ace.
U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, and Arkas Spor defeated Greenwich SAAT Ted Kolejiler, 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 on Oct. 20. Hansen played as a substitute and did not score.
U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolivar have advanced to the final six of the ACLAV Cup, which will be played Oct. 25-29 in Resistencio, Chaco in Argentina.
U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, and setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) helped their Germany league team Berlin Recycling to its first victory of the season as they defeated Generali Haching 25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 29-31, 15-10 on Oct. 21. Touzinsky started all five sets and scored seven points on six attacks and one ace. Shoji started all five sets and scored three points on two blocks and one ace. He set Berlin to a 41.8 kill percent and a .366 hitting efficiency. Berlin is the defending league champion.
The Puerto Rican men’s league returned after a year off and is now in full swing.
U.S. opposite David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.), a 2012 Olympian, is playing for Patriotas de Lares and led his team to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina on Oct. 17. McKienzie led all scorers with 21 points on 16 kills, one block and four aces. U.S. outside hitter Steve Klosterman (Long Beach, Calif.) plays for Carolina and finished with seven points on six kills and one block.
On Oct. 19, McKienzie helped Lares to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 victory over Maratonistas de Coamo. McKienzie scored 14 points on 12 attacks and two aces. U.S. outside hitter Austin Rester, who plays for Coamo, scored eight points on seven attacks and one ace.
On Oct. 23, McKienzie led all scorers as Lares defeate Leones de Ponce, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 27-25. McKienzie finished with 29 points on 28 kills and one block. U.S. outside hitter Tri Bourne (Honolulu, Hawaii), who plays for Ponce, scored 26 points on 20 kills, five blocks and one ace.
U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) made his debut with Plataneros de Corozal and helped the team to a 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23 victory over Carolina. Patak finished with 17 points on 16 attacks and one ace. Klosterman had 16 points on 12 attacks and four blocks for Carolina.
On Oct. 23, Patak led all scorers with 33 points as Corozal defeated Mets de Guaynabo, 25-22, 24-26, 19-25, 25-19, 15-5. Patak scored on 26 kills, three blocks and four aces.

CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Several teams with U.S. players are competing in the men’s CEV Champions League, which began this week.
On Oct. 24, Anderson was named best blocker as he and Zenit Kazan, the defending Champions League winners, defeated Belgium’s Knack Roeselare, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 in Pool A. Anderson led all blockers with three, and added six attacks and one ace for a total of 10 points. He was also credited with 20 receptions, 55 percent positive. To view a photo gallery, click here.
On Oct. 23, Remat Zalau, which includes setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.), fell to Italy’s Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, 32-30, 25-20, 25-18. Winder did not play in the Poo G match due to injury.
Also in Pool G, Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów will play Arago de Sete of France on Oct. 25.
In Pool C, Smith and Tours fell to Poland’s Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle, 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 on Oct. 23. Smith started all three sets and scored eight points on six attacks and two blocks. To view a photo gallery, click here.
