COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 5, 2011) – The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team has announced the final, 20-player roster that it will use for the 2011 FIVB World League.
The team must submit a roster of 12-14 players taken from the 20-player pool at the beginning of each World League Continental Round (pool play) weekend.
Nine players are returning from the 2008 team that won gold medals at World League and the Olympic Games in Beijing: Opposite Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.), setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.), middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah), outside hitter and current team captain Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) and outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.).
The roster also includes 2004 Olympic setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania).
Others returning from past World League rosters are outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.), outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.), middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.), middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.).
Making their debut on the U.S. World League roster are outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and setter Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.).
The FIVB World League is an elite men’s volleyball competition in which the world’s 16 best teams are divided into four pools and play an Intercontinental Round for six straight weekends from May 27 to July 3. Each team plays every other team in the pool for two matches at home and two matches away.
The four pool winners and the four second-place teams advance to the Final Round, which will be held July 6-10 in Gdansk, Poland. As the host country, Poland will automatically advance to the final round. If it does not win its pool, then only the three best second-place teams will qualify for the Final Round.
The U.S. Men will kick off the 2011 World League on May 27-28 when they will play world No. 10-ranked Poland in Lodz, Poland. On June 3-4, the United States will play No. 16 Puerto Rico in San Juan and on June 10-11 the U.S. Men will take on No. 1 Brazil in Belo Horizonte.
The U.S. Men will play the next three weekends in the United States. They will host Poland on June 17-18 in Hoffman Estates, Ill. They will play Brazil on June 24-25 in Tulsa Okla., and Puerto Rico on July 1-2 in Long Beach, Calif. All U.S. matches are at 7 p.m. in their local time zones.
