ANAHEIM, Calif. (July 3, 2009) – The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team makes its first trip to China since the 2008 Olympic Games this weekend for two FIVB World League matches.
The team will be playing in Nanjing, not Beijing, and only six members of the team that won the gold medal last August are on the roster – Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.), David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawai’i) and Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.).
The matches will be played at 4:15 a.m. PT in the United States on July 4-5. Live scoring is available on the FIVB web site.
The U.S. Men swept China twice on June 26-27 in San Jose, Calif.
Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), who led the team in scoring on June 26 (11 points on nine kills and two blocks) and was second on June 27 (12 points on 10 kills, one block and one ace) will not be with the team in China due to illness. He will be replaced by Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.).
The rest of the team from the past weekend remains largely the same, although the U.S. is only bringing 12 players to China instead of 14.
China will be looking to improve after going 1-5 in six straight matches on the road. The team has been led in scoring by Ping Chen, who is 27th among all World League players with 63 points on 58 kills, one block and four aces.
Rooney is leading the United States in scoring and is ninth among all players with 90 points on 82 kills, seven blocks and one ace.
Rooney is sixth among spikers with a success percentage of 52.9 (82/155) while China’s Jianjun Cui is seventh with a 52.04 success percentage (51/98).
In San Jose, the U.S. blocking and serving was especially effective against China. Lee leads Team USA in blocking and is third overall with 19 blocks in 50 attempts for an average of 0.86 per set.
Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) leads the U.S. Men in serving and is third overall with nine aces in 71 attempts for an average of 0.41 per set. Lee is seventh among all blockers with seven for an average of 0.32 per set.
Lambourne is third among all World League diggers with 66 in 93 attempts and an average of three per set.
