COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 19, 2009) – Volleyball fans will be able to watch the U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team – 2008 Olympic and World League champion – play world-class opponents, Italy, China and Netherlands, in three prime volleyball markets this summer.

USA Volleyball has announced that the San Jose State University Event Center Arena in San Jose, Calif.; the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan., will host 2009 FIVB World League matches.

The FIVB World League is an exciting elite men’s volleyball competition in which the world’s best teams are divided into four pools and play for six straight weekends from June 12 to July 18. Winners from each pool will qualify for the final round on July 22-26 in Belgrade, Serbia, along with the host country and a pick from among the second-place teams in pool play.

The total World League prize purse is more than $20 million, with the winning team collecting a prize of more than $1 million.

“We are looking forward to bringing World League volleyball to two new venues in San Jose and Wichita and to returning to Hoffman Estates for a second year,” USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal said. “The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team had a tremendous season in 2008, capped off by the World League victory and the gold medal in Beijing. We are excited to bring this team to our great American fans.”

The U.S. Men, ranked No. 2 in the world, will play in Pool A along with Italy (No. 6), China (No. 10) and Netherlands (No. 30). Team USA will open domestic World League pool play against China on June 26-27 at the San Jose State University Event Center Arena. Both matches are at 7 p.m.

The U.S. Men will spend the following weekend in China; then return to the United States to play Italy on July 10-11 (7 p.m. both nights) at the Sears Centre Arena, near Chicago. Team USA will play its final World League pool play matches on July 17-18 (7 p.m. both nights) at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita.

Ticket information will be available soon.

The United States has played in 11 editions of the FIVB World League since 1990. Prior to their 2008 victory, the U.S. Men’s best results were third-place finishes in 1992 and 2007.
