U.S. Men's Update: CEV Champions Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 16, 2009) – The CEV Indesit Champions Cup continues in Europe and several European club teams with U.S. players are involved.

Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediye, the Turkish league team of Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.) and Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) suffered a 1-3 (13-25, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25) loss to Poland’s Asseco Resovia Rzeszow on Wednesday (Dec. 16).

Millar started all four sets and scored nine points on five kills, two blocks and two aces. Touzinsky played in all four sets, started three and scored eight points on eight kills. Halfway through pool play, I.B. Belediye is 1-2 and in third place in Pool F.

Zenit Kazan, the Super League team of Lloy Ball (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii) leads Pool B with a 3-0 record after two victories in the last week.

On Dec. 10, Kazan defeated Spain’s Unicaja Almeria, including U.S. player Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.), 25-14, 25-20, 25-16. Stanley started all three sets and scored 18 points on seven kills, four blocks and seven aces. Ball did not play for Kazan. Denmark scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and one ace for Almeria.

On Wednesday, Kazan took a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17) victory over Tours of France.

Stanley started all four sets and scored 18 points on 15 kills and three aces. Ball started all four sets and scored four points on four kills.

Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Austrian team Hypo Tirol Innsbruck are 1-1 after their first two CEV Indesit Champions Cup matches. They will play Montenegro’s Budvanska Rivijera Budva on Thursday (Dec. 17).

Russia

U.S. men’s indoor player of the year Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) was back on the court for Fakel Novy Urengoi on Sunday (Dec. 13) as it defeated Ural Ufa, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 25-23, 22-20). Rooney started all five sets and scored 11 points on eight kills, two blocks and one ace. U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) started all five sets and scored one point on one kill.

Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, featuring David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) and Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), defeated Dynamo-Yantar Kaliningrad, 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 26-24) on Saturday (Dec. 12). Priddy started all four sets and led all players with 19 points on 13 kills, one block and five aces. Lee started all four sets and added 10 points on four kills, five blocks and one ace.

Kazan continues to lead the league and defeated Tyumen Tyumen, 3-2 (25-17, 25-21, 21-25 23-25, 15-10) on Dec. 12. Ball did not play in the match. Stanley started the first three sets and played in the fourth, scoring seven points on six kills and one ace.

Turkey

Istanbul Buyuksehir Belediye swept Sosyal Guvenlik Kurumu, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 on Dec. 13. Touzinsky scored 10 points on nine kills and one ace. Millar had nine points on eight kills and one block. Istanbul continues to lead the league.

Fenerbahce got a team-high 20 points from U.S. Olympic Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.), but still fell to Ziraat Bankası 2-3 (27-25, 25-23, 15-25, 20-25, 14-16). Gardner scored on 18 kills and two blocks.

Galatasaray topped Even Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Halkbank, 3-1 (28-26, 25-23, 26-28, 25-17) on Dec. 12. Patak played in four sets, started three and scored seven points on four kills, one block and two aces.

Italy

Prisma Taranto and its setter, U.S. player Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania) were swept by Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo, 22-25, 20-25, 14-25. Suxho started all three sets and scored two points on two kills.

Poland

U.S. Men’s libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) played his first match with Delecta Bydgoszcz, which fell to Jastrzębski Węgiel on Dec. 12, 21-25, 21-25, 23-25.

Brazil

U.S. Men’s player Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) played in two sets and started one and scored seven points on seven kills as his Brazilian team Vivo/Minas fell to Sada Cruzeiro Volei, 20-25, 21-25, 21-25 on Dec. 13.

France

Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) started three sets and scored five points as his French team Poitiers defeated Narbonne, 3-1 (27-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18) on Dec. 12.

Middle European Zone

Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Austrian team Hypo Tirol Innsbruck defeated Croatia’s Haok Mladost on Dec. 12, 27-25, 25-23, 25-20. Holmes had seven points on three kills and four blocks.

Puerto Rico

U.S. player Hudson Bates (Richmond, Va.) led all scorers with 18 points on 15 kills and three blocks as Caribes de San Sebastian defeated Leones de Ponce, 26-24, 25-18, 26-24, on Dec. 11. Bates’ teammate David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) added nine points on six kills, two blocks and one ace. For Ponce, U.S. player Delano Thomas (Sacramento, Calif.) scored 14 points on 12 kills, one block and one ace. Tony Ching (Hawaii) added nine points on eight kills and one block.

Changos de Naranjito swept Plataneros de Corozal, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17, on Dec. 11. Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) scored 12 points on seven kills and five blocks for Naranjito. C.J. Macias (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 12 points on seven kills, three blocks and two aces. Nils Nielsen (Fallbrook, Calif.) led Corozal with nine points on eight kills and one ace. Matt McKinney (Santa Ynez, Calif.) totaled eight points on six kills and two blocks. Casey Patterson (Newbury Park, Calif.) added seven points on six kills and one block.

San Sebastian topped Patriotas de Lares, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) on Dec. 12. San Sebastian’s Smith led all scorers with 24 points on 17 kills, five blocks and two aces. Bates totaled eight points on seven kills and one block. Lares’ Bryan Zodrow (Kaneohe, Hawaii) scored 10 points on nine kills and one ace. Jim Polster (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) added nine points on six kills and three blocks. Tim May tallied three points on three kills.

Ponce defeated the Guaynabo Mets, 3-2 on Dec. 12. Ching scored 28 points for Ponce on 25 kills, one block and two aces. Thomas added nine points on seven kills and two aces. Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored four points on four kills. Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) totaled 15 points for Guaynabo on 13 kills and two blocks.

Corozal beat Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina, 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-13) on Dec. 14. Corozal’s Nielsen led all scorers with 20 points on 18 kills and two aces. McKinney added 13 points on 12 kills and one block. Patterson totaled 11 points on seven kills, three blocks and one ace.

Finally, San Sebastian topped Indios de Mayagüez, 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 15-9) on Dec. 16. Smith had 15 points on 10 kills, three blocks and two aces. Bates added 14 points on 10 kills and four blocks.
