INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: 2012 – Was a member of the team that finished eighth at the Intercontinental Cup in Cairo, Egypt. The tournament was the team's last chance to qualify for the 2012 Paralympic Games.2011 – Part of the U.S. Men's Sitting team that finished eighth at the 2011 Continental Cup in Kettering, England. Charlie was part of the team that competed in two exhibition matches against Canada in a joint training camp and won both matches. 2010 – Appeared in five sets for the U.S. men and had a kill and one block.
PERSONAL: Born Charles Freeman Swearingen in 1977 in Biloxi, Miss. … Parents are Gene and Jan Swearingen… Charlie also has a younger sister named Susan… Charlie attended Gulfport High School in Mississippi, graduating in 1995… He attended Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., graduating in 1999 with a degree in geology… Charlie was born without the non weight-bearing bones of the lower legs. His legs were amputated, just above the ankle joint, when he was 9 months old… Charlie played baseball through college. He also played beach volleyball on the Mississippi Gulf Coast… He has worked as a critical care flight paramedic for the last five years at the only trauma hospital in Mississippi. The operate out of the University of Mississippi Health Care’s AirCare helicopter… Charlie is working on his PhD in physiology at the University of MIssissippi Medical Center… Charlie found out about sitting volleyball in 2009 while attending the Endeavor Games in Edmond, Okla. … He returned to Mississippi and began training with Millsaps volleyball coach Jamie Burns, who worked with him 10-12 hours a week… He attended the A2 sitting volleyball camp in Edmond in 2009 and was offered the chance to become a resident athlete at Central Oklahoma…. “I am here now to improve my game and help Team USA to win gold medals.”
