USA Team Handball to Compete Internationally with Junior Teams

USA Team Handball Headed to Puerto Rico for Junior-Level Tournament

Auburn, ALA – USA Team Handball (USATH) announced today that they will select a special junior Men’s and Women’s Team to compete in the International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy Tournament, held October 27-30, 2014, in Puerto Rico.

The tournament, organized by the IHF and the Pan American Team Handball Federation, provides USA Team Handball with the opportunity to form Junior Men’s and Women’s National Teams. This tournament will be the first time the USATH Men’s and Women’s Junior Teams will have competed internationally since the IHF Cup in 2012, when both junior teams finished in third place.

Regional tryouts for both the men and women’s junior team will be held on September 20-21, 2014, in four locations: New Jersey, N.J.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Chicago, Ill.; and Auburn, Ala.

Women born in 1995 or later are encouraged to attend the tryouts to compete for a spot on the Junior Women’s Team, and men born in 1994 or later are encouraged to compete for a spot on the Junior Men’s Team. More information on the tryouts will be available in the following weeks on

Four coaches will be traveling to Puerto Rico with the Junior National Teams. The head coach and assistant coach for the Junior Women’s National Team will be Julio Sainz and Robert Michalik, respectively. For the Junior Men’s National Team, Mika Maunula and Craig Rot will serve as the head coach and assistant coach, respectively.

Athletes interested in joining the USATH Senior Men’s and Women’s National Teams are also encouraged to attend the regional tryouts for evaluation.

The final rosters for the Junior National Teams will be announced on September 24, 2014, on the USA Team Handball website. Both teams will leave for Puerto Rico October 24, 2014, and return to the United States on October 31, 2014.
