The World Cadet Championships, among the most elite tournament on the planet for judo fighters ages 15 – 17, and the qualifying tourney for the Youth Olympic Games next year in Nanjing, will be held in Miami at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Aug. 8-11, marking another “first” for judo in the United States.

The latest in a string of high-profile international events hosted on home soil by USA Judo, the national governing body for the Olympic sport, the world Cadets will come close on the heels of the Grand Prix Miami, the most prestigious tournament yet held in the United States, other than judo competition at the Olympic Games.

Like the Grand Prix Miami held last month, this is the first time the World Cadets have been held in the United States. Also sanctioned by the International Judo Federation and hosted by USA Judo, the Cadet Worlds is specifically for junior athletes (born 1996 through 1998), to compete for ranking points and a share of the $50,000 for making the podium. Nations can only send their top athletes in a division to this tournament.

Upping the ante even further, The World Cadets will be the qualifying tourney for the Youth Olympic Games slated for Nanjing, China, Aug. 16 – 28, in 2014.

“We are fulfilling a necessary goal – to bring the best tournaments in the world to home soil,” said Jose H. Rodriguez, USA Judo’s CEO. “Our athletes are performing better than ever. Kayla Harrison brought home our first Olympic gold medal from London. Marti Malloy took a bronze medal at the Olympics. Myles Porter and Dartanyon Crockett took a silver and bronze at the Paralympic Games. Having great tournaments is essential to maintaining the momentum.”

“This is a very clear mission for us, as great judo nations who consistently produce results host great events. You can’t have one without the other,” said Lance Nading, President of USA Judo’s Board of Directors to international officials arriving for the Grand Prix last month.
