On Saturday, Maggie Hogan (San Diego, Calif.) and Kaitlyn McElroy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) won the Bronze medal in the women’s K2 1000m race. They finished in 3:54.966, 1.008 seconds behind the first place finisher. Two local Hungarian boats finished 1st and 2nd.
This is the third World Cup medal in as many competitions for the Oklahoma City Boathouse District training partners. They won a Bonze and Silver in the 1000m distance during the 2012 World Cup series.
Hogan and McElroy also finished 2nd in the K2 500m B Final with a time of 1:51.766 (+0.330 seconds behind 1st). They finished 3rd in their heat and 4th in their semifinal en route to the 500m B Final.
Kaitlyn McElroy, Women’s Kayak: “I think it was a solid start to our season. We were able to make positive changes for each successive race, which is what we want to be able to do. We had a good race in the 1000m. We were able to stay in touch with the leaders throughout the race and so when we kicked it in at the end we were able to put ourselves on the podium. Unfortunately we started our kick a few meters to late to catch the two Hungarian crews but the finish was something we had gone into the race wanting to improve and we did. The 500m races were solid. There are a few technical things we can work on to improve boat run but overall it was a good start to the season. We will start implementing the things we learned this coming week in training.”
2012 Olympian Tim Hornsby (Atlanta, Ga.) finished 6th in the men’s K1 200m B Final. He crossed the line in 37.089, 1.470 seconds behind the race’s first place finisher. Hornsby finished 6th in his heat and 4th in his semifinal to reach the B Final.
Kayaker Ryan Dolan (Kailua, Hawaii) placed 6th in the 200m C Final with a time of 37.719. Dolan finished 4th in his heat and 6th in his semifinal to reach the C Final.
Dolan also finished 6th in the K1 500m B Final with a time of 1:43.542, which was 2.568 seconds behind the race’s first place finisher. He finished 4th in his 2nd in his heat and 4th in his semifinal to reach the 500m B Final.
The four paddlers were selected based on their performance at the 2013 U.S. Sprint Team Trials in Oklahoma City, Okla, April 26-27. The 2013 World Championships Team will be named after the World Cups.
