Youth Squad to Travel to Serbia for the 2014 Golden Glove of Vojvodina
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – USA Boxing’s youth boxers will return to international action, July 10-13 in Subotica, Serbia at the Golden Glove of Vojvodina. This 2014 event will be the 32nd edition of the international tournament with the female participants competing for the third straight year. Athletes from 25 nations are expected to compete in tournament action with nine U.S. boxers traveling to Serbia for the international event.
A trio of medalists from the Youth Olympic Games qualifier and Youth Men’s World Championships will headline the United States squad competing in the event. 2013 Junior World Champion and Youth Olympic Games qualifier gold medalist Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.), 2014 Youth World Champion Darmani Rock (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Youth Olympic Games qualifier bronze medalist Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.) will all return to international action in Serbia. Two-time youth national champion Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) took gold in the continental championships earlier this year and he will chase another first place finish at the Golden Glove of Vojvodina.
In addition to Vargas, five more silver medalists from the 2014 Junior and Youth Open will complete the U.S. roster. Male light flyweight Thomas Blumenfeld (Albany, N.Y.), male bantamweight Hector Tanajara (San Antonio, Texas), female lightweight Ariel Arismendez (Tolleson, Ariz.) male light welterweight Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.), and male welterweight John Williams (Baton Rouge, La.) will all make their 2014 international debuts in Serbia.
Approximately 160 athletes are expected to travel to Serbia for the tournament, which could serve as a preview of the Youth Olympic Games later this summer. The United States team will depart on July 7 to settle in to their accommodations in Subotica before the first day of competition on July 10. Quarterfinal action will take place on July 11 with semifinal boxing on July 12 and all 13 championship bouts being contested on July 13.
USA Boxing Resident Coach Edward Rivas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Daniel Soto (Kissimmee, Fla.) will serve as the United States coaches for the tournament with Dr. Robin Goodfellow (Albion, Mich.) and AIBA official Shawn Reese (Harrison, Tenn.) rounding out the United States staff at the event.
