The Amazing Perks of Being on Team USA
September 15, 2012
Being a part of Team USA definitely comes with some amazing perks. Free clothes, memories that will last a lifetime, and meeting the President. This week, the entire U.S. Olympic and Paralympic team was invited to the White House to meet the President. Most of the team arrived on Thursday night and headed straight to the hotel, where we were given a new Nike bag with some pants, a shirt, and a letterman jacket. Once we were all checked in, we headed to a function where all of the athletes dressed up and mingled for a few hours at Union Station. The food was absolutely incredible. From crab cakes to a flag made out of cupcakes, the evening was nothing short of amazing. It was so nice to see teammates and friends that we hadn’t seen since the end of the Olympics. Many people talk about having “post-Olympic depression”, and we were all able to talk about how much we missed each other’s company and how great it was to finally be together again.
The next morning we loaded onto the buses early around 7am and headed over to the White House. We mingled amongst the President’s private band, secret service, and countless photographers. Around 10am, the First Lady and the President walked out onto the lawn, each giving an amazing speech about the powerful effect all of the athletes have made on the country this summer. The President, the First Lady, and the Vice President all stayed after the program was over to shake every single Olympian and Paralympian’s hand. There were over 400 of us. To see how personable and genuine the President was put us all in awe. The entire trip was absolutely amazing and it is obviously something that none of us will ever forget. As for now, we all part back to reality, hoping to see each other again sooner rather than later.
