Johnny Be … Funny

by Peggy Shinn / February 17, 2010

Figure skating’s male diva was in fine form last night — both on the ice and off. With inviting arm gestures and seductive looks, Johnny Weir drew in the crowd with his short program and blew kisses at the end.

Then in the mixed zone, where athletes talk to the media after their performances, Weir drew in the reporters with his charm, candidness, and — in a popular sport where the athletes are often scripted — off-the-cuff comments.

Like this one: When asked if he had watched the other skaters, Weir said that he saw France’s Brian Joubert skate backstage on TV “out of the corner of my mascara.”

Then someone asked Weir what he thought of Samuel Contesti’s costume. In a plaid shirt and dirty-looking overalls, the Italian skater looked like John Boy from The Waltons.

“I thought it was very fashion-forward and a very big risk,” said Weir with a smile, “even riskier than man-cleavage and a pink ruffle.”

Weir’s short-program costume is cut low in the front and features fuchsia ruffles, tassels, and ties.

Asked why his wonderful performance only scored 82.10, while the top three skaters scored 90-point-something, Weir explained that he tends to do his triple flip on the wrong edge.

“I tried to work on it, but I’m old,” said the 25-year-old figure skater. “You can’t really teach an old dog new tricks that easily.”

“As long as it’s pretty, I don’t really care,” he added with a laugh. “And as long as I don’t end up on my [butt] after.”

Weir also said he was nervous last night. So what did he do to calm himself down? In his room at the athlete village, he “Pledged everything.”

“Some people eat, some people drink, some people smoke,” he said. “I Pledge.”

He is sharing his “very clean” room in the athlete village with ice dancer Tanith Belbin, also 25, and they have hung a poster of Audrey Hepburn on the wall. The poster features one of Hepburn’s famous quotes: “I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people's minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing.”

“I thought that [quote] was very good for both me and Tanith,” Weir said, “because we both feel like the old ones on our team. We need to sort of be the icons of the team.”

The men skate the long program on Thursday night, and Weir predicted that it will be “a cat fight" -- "and I’m happy to be part of it.”
