Manville wins gold, Stanghill takes bronze at Austrian Greco Junior Open

GOTZIS, Austria – Mason Manville of New Jersey won a gold medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., the top U.S. performance at the Austrian Junior Greco-Roman Open on March 8.

Manville won six straight matches to capture the gold medal, defeating Stefan Clement of France in the championship finals.

The competition was conducted in a two-pool system. Manville needed five victories to capture his pool, defeating athletes from Finland, the United States, Austria, the Czech Republic and Israel to earn his spot in the finals.

Also earning a bronze medal was Barrett Stanghill of Montana at 74 kg/163 lbs. Stanghill opened with a loss to Rajbek Bisultanov of Denmark, then defeated Colin Schubert of the USA in order to reach the bronze-medal round. He defeated Andre Kogler of Austria to claim his medal.

The USA had five other athletes who placed in the top six of their weight classes. Placing fourth was Curt Calovecchi of Michigan at 84 kg/185 lbs. Taking fifth were Paul Rodriguez of California at 60 kg/132 lbs., Brandon Marshall at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Rafal Rokosz of New York at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Coming in sixth was Peter Strassfield of New York at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Team USA was fifth in the standings, with USA II placing 11th among 14 teams. France defeated Serbia for the team title.

The U.S. team also participated in joint training with Austrian athletes and others as part of this Junior level tour.
